  • @PoetikDragon yes, he's almost two and a half. I was going to start the ball rolling at his annual visit to the vet. I just had a baby so things have been busier than usual. He's going to the vet next week so i'll find out what things I need. Usual …
  • I imported a dog from a Japanese breeder. Like Heidi said, my motivations were to increase the gene pool here in North America. But first and foremost he is my pet. He doesnt show and I havent studded him out yet. Perhaps he's not healthy or desirab…
  • Sooo cute!
  • If you want a quality japanese akita, i'd only ever buy from an AKIHO breeder. Did you really spend that much on this dog? And they sold it as a show quality JA?
  • My akita ken has no desire to chase anything except real rabbits and squirrels.
  • Saigo's fave are chicken necks, backs and wings. Makes sense, those are the boniest!
  • Raw all the way. I had my dog on premium kibble (Orijen kibble and Freeze dried). Not only is raw far more healthier than kibble, my dog loves it more and it costs way less.
  • @shibamistress - totally agree. Home prepared raw is way cheaper than most kibble (not to mention so much healthier).
  • I started off following barf but then after you adjust the diet to what works for your dog. Some days Saigo will only want to eat chicken wings, so next day we feed him organs and tripe. You learn to play it by ear and assess his meals according to …
  • Seems like its worse in the mornings. Today he started howling a bit. At 6am. ~X( If it is a female in heat, is there anything I can do to lessen the impact on him?
  • Thanks Brad, ...nothing to indicate Saigo isn't feeling well. His energy is high, poops are perfect and doesn't look to be acting any different physically, with the exception of the whining. We took him to an off leash today that's in another town …
  • I just looked at Hazuki Go's pedigree. She is littermate to my dog's grandfather, Ginji Go Shirai. http://www.akitapedigree.com/details.php?id=75271 So Hazuki is Saigo's Great-Aunt :)
  • Congrats on the new litter. Wow, Hazuki is beautiful. Does she have any awards in Japan?
  • Hokkaido is far. :P and wickedly cold in Jan lol.
  • I think having a dog would be a PLUS and should cause your insurance to go down! My dog would thrwart break-ins and save them tons of money in payouts. Plus he's the secondary house alarm too incase I forget to set mine at night. I wonder if it is p…
  • The dog park we go to has a "pit" where all the dog owners congregate for play but is also attached to a long system of trails that is also off-leash. I find that Saigo much prefers the trails over the pit, and dogs seem less aggressive wh…
  • I'm sorry to hear about the bad experiences. I do want to agree with @Coyote that each store is different and their trainers/employees are likely to vary in training methods and styles too. Not sure if the trainers are required to teach the same cur…
  • There's an intact husky female who lives down the street. When she's in heat, Saigo (intact) goes crazy at her pee spots around her house. He'll lick the trees, grass and bushes and start foaming at the mouth. Last time he wanted to start digging a …
  • Orijen is also very high in proteins, stuff that they need if they're super active. A switch to a less protein-rich food might help.
  • @cdenney it's really designed for hard floors, baseboards and the nooks and crannies under furniture, not carpets. I have a giant shag area rug that it won't go on - but that's why I have the super Dyson. Even though roomba cleans the front mat I'd …
  • @poeticdragon yah, I guess i shouldn't complain since you have a longer trip. @violet_in_seville I would have considered the trip ( I'd fly with Saigo ) but I'm totally not interested in bringing him to a big show with hundreds of other dogs and p…
  • WTF, St Louis?!! That's no where near Ohio or Michigan.
  • Saigo (JA) has bad seasonal allergies. We also have lots of forests where we live so the pollen and allergens are especially worse for him. Saigo will take 1 benadryl in the morning and 1 at bedtime. For his itching we use a cortate cream (he itch…
