2 months: 15lb
2.5 months: 19lb
3 months: 25lb
4 months: 30lb
4.5 months: 38lb
5 months: 40
6 months: 55
7 months: 65
8 months: 70

I'm super excited to see just how tall he will get in these next four months. Right now, he is 24.5-25 inches. Granted, an iPad and a yardstick make for clumsy measuring devices when you have a puppy squirming around, but consistently i'll usually get 24.5"-25".
Anyway, just wanted to see if anyone else knew how their pups grew :)

p.s. here is some photos of Toki keeping calm and chiving on.

I got a request from Shiba rescue searching for possible Kai Ken rescue resources in California @tjbart17 regarding what looks to be a Kai mix. I am very familiar with rescues making up elaborate breeds to help move their dogs out faster and most of the time, they are just generic mixes, however, this dog actually seems to fit the bill for a Kai/Shiba mix. The brindle is diluted and he has urajiro, which would make sense if mixed with Shiba, and the face and brindle distribution is reminiscent of Kai:

"this pup was adopted from Ridgecrest shetler a year ago and now they went and got a puppy and he needs a home
I sent his picture to breeders and they think he is a Kai Ken I guess he has food issues with the puppy
can you take him or do you know of someone who can I cant right now and he needs to go to a experianced rescue that has a facility
thanks for any help Michelle
p.s the shelter said he was a shiba he is about 35lbs

What else? Goro loves to tease ChoCho and sleep in her crate with her He is the biggest fatty I've ever seen! When I'm eating something he barks at me and demands that I give him not just a piece, but ALL OF IT. Last night he tried to run between his and ChoCho's food bowls to eat both at the same time.... A true fatty indeed. Oh, and we LOVE his soft puppy coat. One of the neighbors who came over said it would make a perfect fur scarf LOL. Luckily his personality is super sweet, so I think we'll keep him the way he is, fur and all Here are some pictures of the little man.

AKC Alert on USDA proposal http://www.nihonken.org/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/7434/akc-alert-on-usda-proposal Thu, 17 May 2012 15:58:24 -0400 ayk 7434@/forum/index.php?p=/discussions [Thursday, May 17, 2012]

http://www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=4656

Yesterday, a proposed change to how the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)/Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) may administer federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA) regulations affecting “Retail Pet Stores and Licensing Exemptions” was published to the Federal Register. Comments on the proposal are now being accepted by APHIS.

The American Kennel Club continues to believe that the proposed changes have the potential to significantly impact AKC breeders, and encourages all interested parties to review the proposed rule and offer comment.
Click here to view the proposed rule.
Click here to view a USDA Fact Sheet about the proposed rule.

Background: The AWA exempts from federal licensing and regulations “retail pet stores”, which are defined as anyone selling puppies directly to a final customer for use as pets. It is this exemption that enables most small or hobby breeders to currently avoid being licensed and regulated by the USDA.

The new proposed rule rescinds the exempt “retail pet store” status of anyone selling pets at retail to buyers who do not physically enter the breeder’s facilities in order to personally observe the animals available for sale prior to purchase and/or to take custody of the animals after purchase. The primary purpose of this rule is to regulate breeders who sell puppies online. The changes in the rule mean that breeders or others who sell puppies sight unseen, by any means, would now be regulated under USDA regulations.

The proposed rule also increases from three to four the number of a breeding females that a person may maintain on his or her premises and be exempt from the licensing and inspection requirements in the AWA, regardless of how the offspring are sold.

The AKC has a number of concerns, including:

•In many cases, geographic distance makes it difficult for a purchaser to personally visit or pick up the puppy at the breeder’s kennel. Such scenarios are particularly common for breeders and fanciers of rare breeds and others who may be purchasing a second pet from the same breeder or already have an established relationship with a breeder. Requiring such individuals to comply with regulations designed for large commercial may not be appropriate.

•The term “breeding female” is not defined. It is unclear at what age a female dog might be considered a “breeding female”.

•The AKC believes, based on its own experience in kennel inspections and breeding operations that the Regulatory Impact Analysis provided in the proposed rule vastly underestimates both the number the of individuals who will be impacted and the expense to occasional breeders to establish commercial-level facilities.

Changes to regulations differ significantly from legislation. Unlike legislation, where entire new laws can easily be developed, the proposed rule (regulations) may only address a narrow scope of how an existing law—the AWA—may be administered by the government. This means that the options for impacting regulatory outcomes are very limited compared to options for impacting legislation. The primary recourse for impacted parties for regulatory change is to provide specific expertise and comment on the proposed rule – which may or may not be accepted by the executive authority interpreting the law.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

The USDA is seeking constructive comment on the proposed rule or alternatives to the recommendations. Individuals concerned about the proposed rule change for retail pet stores have until Monday, July 16, 2012, to comment on the rule. Comments may be made:

•AKC encourages you to respectfully share your thoughtful comments through the official public comment site. The AKC will also pursue a multi-pronged approach:

•In addition to encouraging you to share your concerns directly with APHIS, AKC GR is also interested in your concerns and questions. You may send these to doglaw@akc.org. We will share the most common concerns directly with APHIS (leaving off your contact information). These will also help to inform AKC’s response to these regulations.

•We will provide formal comments regarding AKC’s position on the regulation.
Please note, federal regulations do not supersede state licensing laws: If you meet the requirements for licensing at both state and federal levels, you would be responsible for obtaining both licenses. Some states do not require breeders to be licensed by the state if they are already federally licensed. This is an issue that varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Individuals should check with their state/local authorities to determine how they would be impacted.

Legislature Takes Aim at Banning Dogs for Hunting Bears and Bobcats

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has joined forces with Senator Ted Lieu and Senate President Pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg to introduce Senate Bill 1221, legislation that would outlaw the use of dogs for hunting bears and bobcats in California. This misguided legislation not only threatens the long-standing tradition of hunting these species with hounds, but would set precedent placing all other types of hunting with dogs in serious jeopardy. In addition to this concern, COHA is committed to ensuring that all natural resource management decisions - including method of take - are appropriately made by the California Fish and Commission, in public forum and based on the best available science.

COHA will work with our member organizations - including the California Houndsmen for Conservation and the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance - and our individual members to defeat this blatant anti-hunting measure. Stay tuned to future Field Wires for more information and how you can assist COHA in this effort.

He has chewed rugs, broken windows, eaten screens, and the list goes on. Did I mention he was a "rescue"? )

He is only 2 but at this rate I am so frustrated. I'd like one month with no vet visit!? (I finally got pet insurance a few days ago.) Hey all, recently Saru has been getting sick; diarrhea/vomiting. took him to the vet first time and they said it was Giardia- got dewormer and antibiotics and a few days later he was fine. (did both dogs as a precaution) well this week he's showing the same symptoms, vet said no Giardia and gave me dewormers for both regular suspect worms and Giardia. This time he seems a lot worse so I'm really worried. He ate this morning but after first bathroom break he got really depressed and lethargic right now he's camped out in my closet and just keeps staring at me. Vet first thing in the morning...again but any advice would be extremely useful. Thanks much.]]>
Back leg weakness in a young dog-it's spondylosis :( http://www.nihonken.org/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/7388/back-leg-weakness-in-a-young-dog-its-spondylosis- Mon, 30 Apr 2012 14:22:21 -0400 shibamistress 7388@/forum/index.php?p=/discussions
Oskar was acting odd the other night. It was late, and I'd just got home, and he wasn't as effusive in his greeting as usual. Then I noticed he was systematically getting out his favorite toys (egg baby platypus for the record..he's had it a year and it is still his favorite) and laying down with it, but while he was looking for his toy, his tail was down. I thought something was up, because of that. He brought his toy over by me and laid down near me and was much more "clingy" than usual....like he had to be in physical contact with me. He just looked kind of scared.

Then he tried to get up and couldn't. He's always been slow to get up (which now worries me), but this time he tried, and his back legs collapsed under him twice, and his tail was down. We got him up with a towel, but he was scared and agitated, looking at his back legs....he couldn't keep them under him, and couldn't seem to control them. We got him to lay down, and palpated him--range of motion was fine, and though he was curious, he also clearly was in no pain. But also no control. He could stand but not walk easily. We went back and forth on the emergency vet (our place is like 5 times the cost of the regular vet and they take your credit card as you walk in the door, so I avoid it unless there is bleeding or severe pain or something clearly critical), but he wasn't in pain, and after about an hour, he was able to walk ok, though we noticed his toes were turned in a bit on the right side. We put him to bed then, and when he got up in the morning, he was walking ok, except for a very slight lag on the right side, and by the end of the day he was walking normally.

He was clearly alert the whole time, so I don't think it was a seizure. I think that the tail down was not just a sign of discomfort, anxiety now, but might have been something in the spine since the weakness in his legs was bilateral.

He's not even two. He'll be two at the end of May. He's 120 pounds, and could probably stand to lose 5 pounds (which will be a priority after this), but it seems more than just weight....

I'll let you all know what our vet says today, too, but it was super scary, and I really want to know what is going on with our big boy!]]>
Yamabushi no "Leo" http://www.nihonken.org/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/7422/yamabushi-no-leo Sun, 13 May 2012 19:34:20 -0400 shibamistress 7422@/forum/index.php?p=/discussions
He's settled in well. Bel plays well with him, and seems to enjoy him except when he's trying to nurse. Her corrections have been entirely appropriate, too, so that's going well. Toby (our most difficult dog) has surprised us by being totally uninterested. They've only met with Leo in the big cage, and Toby doesn't even get upset when Leo starts to howl or jump. (There is a lot of howling/whining and jumping going on).

Oskar, who is easiest with other dogs, does not like Leo. At first he just snarled and barked. The first couple of days he would snarl as soon as Leo moved. (they have also been meeting through the crate). Now he's calmed down some, but he does snarl and growl if Leo jumps up on the crate, and he also doesn't like it at all if he sees Leo jump on us. Their face to face meetings have been very limited, with one of us holding the puppy and petting/feeding Oskar at the same time. Oskar is getting more used to him, but clearly doesn't tolerate the puppy frenzy much. At least Oskar is over his mopey-ness of the first couple of days when he wandered out with a "betrayed" look on his face. We're going to keep everything very slow with those two.

The puppy is very clean, and lets us know when he needs to go out! He also is very busy--running, biting, climbing. He climbed the stairs the very first day. He's gone on a couple of walks, which he enjoys, and he would explore the whole yard if we'd let him, but he's hard to see in the wooded areas and so fast we can't catch him, so we're only letting him explore in the smaller very secure part of the yard for now.

My husband, who has only had one puppy before (the ultra mellow Oskar), was quite surprised by the activity level (and by the biting, hanging from pant legs, howling, humping--yep, lots of the latter). This puppy is quite like Toby the Shiba was as a pup--a very cute little demon spawn!

Anyway, pics! Some of you may have seen these other places.

Look at those leg stripes!

ThunderShirt http://www.nihonken.org/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/6147/thundershirt Fri, 07 Jan 2011 17:59:01 -0500 sunyata 6147@/forum/index.php?p=/discussions
It arrived this afternoon, so I thought we would give it a try. Nola is an overall anxious dog. She recovers quickly, but there are some instances where her anxiety really takes over her. (When she is around large dogs or my nephew.)

It came with very easy instructions and the material is SUPER soft. I let Nola sniff it (and yes, it make her anxious... new item in the house and all). We played some treat games with it so that she could get used to it before I put it on her.

Putting it on was a little bit of an ordeal... However, now that I know how to do it, I can get it on and off of her quickly with no fuss at all. In order to get a good snug fit, I had to put it on twice. The second time, Nola was much more agreeable, so I think that helped, as well.

And presto...

She was a little confused. I have never dressed her in anything other than collars and harnesses, so the confusion was a bit understandable. It took her a few minutes to realize she could still walk (I had to lure her with cheese). And it took a few more minutes for her to realize she could still sit and lay down.

But it really was like a switch had been flipped. She was much calmer than normal and WAY less anxious. She did not even flinch when Bella jumped off the bed and started barking at the front door (neighbor walking down the street... she could see him from the bedroom window). She is just calmly laying beside my chair.

And while this is definitely not a miracle product, and the real test is yet to be performed (I will go down and see my nephew in a couple of weeks), I really do think that there is something to the ThunderShirt.

you can google translate this letter.

It's about Degradation of color for red akita. Degradation of color= too dark red(burnt red) or pale red( too light). and you will get this color of puppy if you use redxred breeding for all generation. and way to fix is introduce white color to your breeding to correct the color of red to moderate red.

I don't read japanese but tried to figure it out. lol

Ritsu is from the same kennel as Ayu & Tora, he was 4 weeks old when I was in Japan. He made it safely here thanks to Corina! Actually Corina and Tara drove him to us here in Taos, so we got to hang out for a few days with them too, it was great!

Here is Ritsu...

Sosuke http://www.nihonken.org/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/6409/sosuke Sat, 02 Apr 2011 07:33:45 -0400 hondru 6409@/forum/index.php?p=/discussions
He's sooo sweet. We took him out for a little stroll around the cargo area, although it was the middle of the night and it was raining/snowing, so we didn't do that for too long. Rakka came up with us, so they met each other in the parking lot and went for a pee break together. Sosuke's first reaction upon seeing Rakka was to run up to her waving his paws and wagging his tail. He's really friendly. Rakka was weirded out by the whole thing, and was acting like she was afraid of him. She snarked at him a bit, and he was totally unphased. Every time he sees her, he's like, "Friend!" and acts all playful. I don't think Rakka knows quite what to make of the whole thing just yet.

The ride home was really bad, in terms of weather. We didn't get home until 4:30am, whereas in good weather, we would have been home by 2:00-2:30am. Giant snow wads were falling and ruining the visibility and the roads were all half frozen, half wet. But, it was fun spending that time with our new pup. From the very start, he was wagging his tail and licking us, and just being so friendly. We gave him some water, some food, and he just cuddled right into my lap and went to sleep. When we got home, we played. As soon as I put him in his crate for the night, he was asleep. Almost faster than I could turn around. A very long and eventful day!

I only managed one picture, but it's not a very good one. This was taken in the light from the headlights. See those big gobs of snow?

I was really cold in this picture because Sosuke had peed on my lap. Whoops!]]>
