Kishu in Folklore

I recently sent a book to @shishiinu that had a collection of folkloric stories from Wakayama (I believe). I noticed that there were a lot of dogs featured in the artwork throughout the book, so I took pictures of the images. I wish I knew the artist. I really love the style. It's relatively simple-- no frills and very cute.

I think they're meant to be Kishu Ken (or related hunting-type dogs)?

  • Umm...is that a monkey on the bottom? Haha.
  • Yes. :D the bottom picture has oni, a monkey, and the Kishu. I believe that one's from the story of Momotaro.
  • I love this! Thanks for sharing.

Yeah looks like a kishu and monkey going after some oni.

What is the name of this book?

@Saya - I think it's something like "Miyoshi Goes to Heaven"? (天 へのぼった三吉 - Ten e Nobotta Miyoshi)

    This is it.
  • That's an interesting find. The drawings are cute. Though, I must be honest, I had no idea that one thing was a monkey. It makes sense now that someone has pointed it out, but I really could not tell on my own.
