UPDATED *Meet Up 5/24/15* Pacific NorthWest, Washington State: Beacon Rock State Park walk & hangout

Pacific NorthWest friends! I'd like to organize a Meet Up for the second half of this month to walk around the Beacon Rock area with other Nihon Ken owners. It's a dog friendly area and you can go all the way down to the Columbia River shore.

After discussing with several forum members on Facebook, we've settled on the 24th of this month to have the Meet Up.

So far it looks like we have at least 5 people going for sure, and either way it'll at minimum be my roommate, my sister, and I with Genko, Ren, Grommet, and Mika (1 Laika, 1 Hokkaido, 2 Kai) :)

Where: Beacon Rock State Park http://www.parks.wa.gov/474/Beacon-Rock
When: 10am
How far: 1 mile from parking area to the loop and river

What to bring: Pack sandwiches/salads, bring a growler if you're into beer, a container/containers for water, doggy bags to clean up after your pet, packs for the pups if you're into that so that they can carry their own water and bags in/out, jeans/long pants, sturdy shoes, layers as it gets pretty chilly in the wind from what I'm reading, sunscreen, more water

More info on the location: http://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/river-to-rock-trail?searchterm=ridell+lake

Cost: $10/car for Day Pass or (much better deal) $30 for a Discovery Pass which is lasts a year from purchase and is transferrable back and forth between two cars (one at a time)

Discover AND Day Pass can both be purchased from a vending machine at the park

  • I'm bringing both Ren and Genko, so here's a chance to meet a Hokkaido girl ;)

@WhoBitMe I'm not sure what you think about a group hike with Meitou, but you're definitely welcome to bring him out!
  • Someone should bring a rattle snake kit, too.

Beacon Rock State Park looks very promising for being within the 3 hour timeframe of Seattle and has a nice big picnic area + some shorter non-vertical trails that have river access. So it should make for a leisurely morning and afternoon :) There's also a highly reviewed general store/cafe with american and persian items that's 1.5 miles before reaching the park.

  • I'll be going! Sagan will have to be on-leash for the majority hike, though, since he's unpredictable with new dogs. I think he'd get along well with other Kai and maybe @cezieg's Genko, but unsure about others! He's always hit-or-miss with other Shibas too.

May 24th is actually a perfect day for me, too, because I'm busy the entire last weekend (29th - 31st) of May.
  • Sounds like fun, but unfortunately Sundays aren't good days for me to meetup for hikes. :( So I'll have to pass, but otherwise I'd like to go. Except...rattlesnakes. *shudder*
  • Ok Beacon Rock it is! Updating the post information. It's going to be more of a hang out and walk vs a hardcore hike, as there's a nice 1 mile loop that we can take down to the river :) Everything else is on the Oregon side or too deep into the bigger parks that it ends up being 4 hours or more of a drive from Seattle.
