Kaiju--Rebranding part II

We have been VERY fortunate to be able to provide a home for Kaiju (Thanks Brad and Jen :) ) so that he could further the shikoku lines here in So Cal. Kaiju has been such a riot to have around the house! He gets along with Bea wonderfully, though he drives her crazy sometimes with his humping antics. So far, he has been helping Bea with keeping the lizard, groundhog and rat population levels in check, growling at all the teenage kids/smoking adults/hoodlums that loiter near the empty lots surrounding our house, ripping tennis balls and toys apart in like, 5 min (I have to invest in more hard core toys) and oh yea! have stare down contests with the neighbor's dog. Below are just some pics and videos of Kaiju at our home. Oh yea! Please let me know if this is normal behavior between Kaiju and Bea...please note, they were playing for several minutes before I took the video and during that time, Bea was play bowing with him.

@ttddinh - Nope, that requires leaving the house, which I have not wanted to do for a few days. I'll probably check the mail tomorrow. ;o)

    Aww can't wait for pictures

@shishiinu My mother's backyard is infested in them. Our dog used to keep them in check but when he passed they totally took over.

You mean ground squirrels cause I don't think groundhogs have made it this far. The groundhog is much bigger and they like softer soil then what we have here.

FINALLY!! All the pictures and videos uploaded on my slow-@## connection!!! Here is the link-- http://s1071.photobucket.com/albums/u516/ttddinh/

You could also see Heidi's paracord collar she made for bea--btw, we love it!!! It's amazing!

@shishiinu--I have no idea if its a ground squirrel or groundhog. It makes these holes in the ground and Bea and Kaiju furiously try to dig it out, lol. I just hope they are not mice or rats (which Bea and Kaiju? (not sure which dog made the kill for the latest one)) which I HATE.

@shishiinu - Come to NY, LoL, last year I had 3-5 of them romping around my backyard. We also have deer, turkey, fox, fresh and salt water fish, & various birds :P

@Calia--we don't have any of those. Just crows (really large ones sometimes), stray cats and various rodents. Oh and when we first got the house, there was absolutely no fencing so we had a lot of tumbleweeds as well. It was a nightmare.

@ttddinh - LoL, we have crows and stray cats as well, though we lost a lot of crows due to development and west nile. The cats and raccoons (aside for cars) are actually the biggest predators here since wolves, coyotes, cougars, etc were all killed off a long time ago.

Kaiju looks very happy in his new home. I am glad he is adapting!

And that rodent you had in the photo is definitely not a groundhog. Groundhogs around here weight ~12-15 lbs! And some people suggest you should eat them!

    Dear Everyone,
I would be happy to send Mei to your homes. She will get rid of all your critters, deer, cats, raccoons, etc. The only thing she is too scared to hunt are bears. And she won't just dig for them. She will get them quickly and kill them with a bite and shake. If you have a pool, she will then dispose of the bodies in it.

Kaiju looks great! I'm glad he's doing so well.

@araks @poeticdragon You wouldn't laugh if you were my parents who have a big pool! :-)
  • @tjbart17 I bet my boy would do the same thing. We have found his plushies in our koi pond a few times! Its because he carries them over to the pond to get a drink out of the fountain, and drops them while drinking. Poor, soggy Squidbear...

Kaiju is my heart dog. He is soooo sweet and I just love him to death. In addition, he is also such a goofball. For example, you know those carriers that you put your baby in? Well, on our walk, Bea (shiba) saw it on the sidewalk (to be thrown away) and sat in it. I thought it was cute so I brought it home to clean it. Lo and behold, prince Kaiju decides to keep it for himself and nap and lie in it. The thing is its small so he barely fits in it. My boy is a hoot!!! Sorry for the bad picture quality, but it was far away and all I had lying around was my ipad and I put it there on purpose because Bea just uses to lounge and survey the entire yard.

Kaiju was re-branded for me at the expo. He was just so good with Kurenai and with everyone. I couldn't get over how sweet he was to her. You could tell there was a little crush going on there. I hope I get to see him again this year. @ttddinh

@tjbart17--God willing, you may seem him before then :) Well, he did get her pregnant...so it was def more than a crush.... :) But I like Kurenai a lot too...the three of them were playing like crazy and got along really well (Kurenai, Kaiju and Bea).

@brada1878-- Here it is...Kaiju's famous humping. Is this too much humping?? Freddie looks way uncomfortable. If it gets too much, I try to re-direct Kaiju, should intervene earlier?

Yeah I probably wouldn't allow that. He looks über unhappy. That's just my thought though.

@ttddinh - I didn't see that level of humping to be too concerning, however Kilbun doesn't looks super comfortable with any of the interaction. You might want to limit their playtime till he is bigger - don't stop letting them play, just shorten it some so they both get breaks.

Really, with play/humping/whatever, if you are uncomfortable with it, then you can stop it. It's up to you. It's good that they interact, but if it goes past your comfort level interrupt them with some treats or something.

Maybe I should clarify. I didn't think it was too much humping. But Freddie doesn't look comfortable with Kaiju's Shikoku attempt at play. That's why I would separate them.

So since I had to take Kilbe to go get her stitches removed today, I also took Kaiju and Freddie (for that lump on his lip).

Prognosis: I think I need to go to a new vet.

    1. Kaiju eyes are still a little opaque/blue. Vet said he is doing MUCH better...I don't feel that way. I think it's kind of the same. Anyway, Kaiju is his fourth bottle of tobramycin. :( (eye drops) Vet said maybe he will have to put drops in for the rest of his life because sometimes it just doesn't go away. Also, because Kaiju does not have a hard time seeing, it may not be soooo urgent.

    2. When the vet stitched Kilbe back together, he stapled on part of a scratch (so not a clean line). Hence today, when the vet tech tried to take the staples out, she started crying and really bleeding. Vet tech said that the skin had already started growing on top of the staples.

    3. Freddie's fat lip (@shikokuspirit) may be due to an allergic reaction or may be a cyst or tumor per the vet. He wanted to perform surgery on Freddie because he said that the lump is really hard and very highly unlikely to be an allergic reaction. He also asked if it was growing bigger. Anyhow, I opted for a benadryl shot, penicillen and some other shot. If the lump does not go down in one week, looks like I have to get it surgically removed.

    4. And I don't think kaiju likes the vet bc he has to get sedated. Actually besides that hoodlum character we met when we first got him and the hen he met our cat lady neighbor first time, he has never growled at anyone as much as he growls at the vet. @brada1878 is kaiju good with ur vet?
This has been a crazy month in vet bills. Ugh. :(

  • "Vet said maybe he will have to put drops in for the rest of his life because sometimes it just doesn't go away."

Not to second guess your vet.....Assuming you mean treating with Tobramycin long term.... If the ocular issues continue I would seek the advice of a veterinary ophthalmologist for a more comprehensive diagnosis. Quick fyi.... There are some side effects in long term use of the drops.

I think a second vet or a second opinion would be a very good idea.

    1. I don't remember the story behind Kaiju's opaque/blue eyes? I second Snf's recommendation of a specialist opinion. Or at least a CERF clinic exam (~$35-$40).

    2. It's not uncommon for skin to grow faster than expected and over stitches if left in for the prescribed 14 days, but it does sound like the staple placement was a little off. I hate shoddy stitching. In my rescue dog, it led to pockets of pus being trapped.

    3. It's kinda incredulous to think that a puppy, especially a puppy of mixed lineage, would develop a tumor so young.

@ayk when I first got kaiju he had a scratched his cornea. I didn't know it was old but I freaked out and took him to the vet. The vet had to sedate I'm to even look at him. He got a two shots, and two different kind of antibiotics, and drops. It went away, but the opaqueness comes back when it's windy, his eyes are irritated, etc. then i go to the vet, get more drops and it goes away but comes back. So that has been the story with kaiju. However the scratch does not affect his vision.

  • @ttddinh You're in So Cal right? I can recommend a very good ophthalmologist in Tustin. He is very knowledgeable and doesn't recommend unnecessary courses of action or useless extra tests, medications, etc. He managed to save my cat's eye with just meds (other place wanted to do a $2,000 surgery to save it) and she did well on it for over a year until a new scratch made it flare up again. Then he ended up doing the removal of the eye when it became necessary and did a very nice job. She is healing well, stitched up and healed over beautifully - just looks like she's winking all the time. He has a friendly staff and vet students he likes to show "interesting" cases to. He remembered my cat over a year after the last time he examined her, and was genuinely interested in her eyes and health not the least bit dismissive or assuming. I took my Akitas to him for their CERF exam as well.

@poeticdragon, can u pm his info. Thanks.
  • Yeah, the staples thing struck me as weird. I know, too, that skin can grow over them, but like Ayk, I don't like shoddy stitches and my vet is pretty good. (I think she'd be horrified by the staples. While she has all sorts of odd ways of doing things--some of the "outfits" she comes up with as a way of covering injuries instead of using regular bandages are pretty funny, she is also very good with her stitching!)

Oskar has had to use those eye drops on occasion. I wouldn't want to use them all the time, either.
