Esterisol/Neutersol...Ever heard of it?

Came across this blog post, and thought this was something worth sharing:

In short, it's a way the neuter a dog with nothing more than an injection in each testicle. The dog is no longer able to produce sperm and yet is still capable of producing about 50% of the testosterone that they would have produced if left intact. I find this intriguing as this would allow a dog to be neutered at 6 months and yet still continue to develop, though probably at a slower pace. It seems to have been recently brought back into production and is starting to be distributed in the US.

I'm curious to see what will come of this and if it will in fact become the new common way to neuter.

  • That sounds really cool, and a much easier alternative to the whole surgery.
  • easier??? I practically winced and doubled over at the mere thought of a needle to the nuts...and it's an injection to each!

  • Hrm. Says it reduces sperm production and motility but does not eliminate it. Given that, I'll admit I'm somewhat skeptical. I kind if wish they would have given some numbers---like say that only 1/1000 ties ever produced a puppy (because it seems like this is going to have some sort of failure rate compared to conventional neutering, even if that failure rate is low).
  • If this was applicable to male cats, I can see it being a very nice solution for feral cat colonies, but no thanks for my dogs. I would rather confine my intact dogs to keep them from breeding. It's not rocket science to do so.
  • I don't trust it.
