Hokkaido/Ainu - which one?

Hi all,

I have recently discovered that there has started a hokkaido breeder in Denmark and I went to look at their website, and they call the breed hokkaido, like in here, but many places on the internet, it's called ainu dog/inu/ken...

Which is commonly used or more correct?

Comments

  • Every Japanese person I've spoken to call them ainu and every European person I've spoken to call them hokkas lol.
  • Same dog different names. The Ainu name is based on the aboriginal Ainu people of Hokkaido and since the Hokkaido ken was used by the Ainu people they can also be called Ainu ken. You'll see that quite a bit of Japanese breeders will give Ainu names to their Ainu kens.
  • Cool, thanks for the info... Got kinda curious, and now we have this breed in Denmark too, so I might take a trip to see them sometime :) Would be fun.
