Higo wolf dog

edited February 2010 in Other Breeds
Found another japanese breed that is said to be the closest to the Japanese wolf (well thats what the owners say). Pronounced higorou ken or higo ookami ken, it is a native dog from the Kumamoto prefecture. The websites mentioned that the dog originated from yamainu (mountain dog or feral dog) that mated with Japanese wolves.

Not sure how true it is but hey it could be. enjoy.

    LOL. That is a cat-like face. :-)

Actually, on a second look, it's almost AA-esque.

Looks like a Shiba on steroids LOL

Or a Bull Dog in a Shiba suit :) ~

A "short furred" Chow also came to mind. (There is such a category.)

The story surrounding the origin of this "breed" is rather dubious and perhaps that's one of the reasons why the breed hasn't been recognized as natural treasure of the prefecture yet.

A lady in my neighborhood has a dog like that and he's stunning. However she calls him an Asian mutt .

It seems like a very heterogeneous breed in what regards appearance. That might be one of the reasons it doesn't have more recognition.
All three examples look like 3 different mixes of different breeds.

I think that first one with the cat face is gorgeous!
