Shiba Inu Aikokai Specialty - Shikoku Booth
  • I've spoken with the President of BSA. She had no problems with us showing up this past year. She said that our dogs were very well behaved. She was very excited to have had 4 Shikoku and 1 Ken attend.

She believes that this is benefitical for the promotion and preservation of Japanese breeds. When Nippo in Japan hear of it, this should make them very proud. The Nippo judge at the previous show was very surprised and pleased that there were other Japanese breeds there.

For next year, she thinks that the Shikoku booth and pamplets info on the breed is a great idea. So long as we have shade for our dogs (set up a tent) and continue to have control of our dogs (on leash or in crates)...should be okay. She is going to annouce this at their next BSA meeting to get a vote, which is this upcoming Sunday.

She needs to know about how many people and their Shikoku will be attending. The club needs to know numbers, maybe they will set aside a spot for us to fit our booth and dogs.

The BSA show will be the 2nd Sunday in March.

Those of you who will be going please give confirmation in this post.

Those of you who might be going but not for certain, maybes are allowed.

I need to let her know by this Saturday, so that she can fit it into her notes.

    Thank you.

We will be bringing our two Shibas, Koshi & Harlow as usual and there will be three humans. We plan on bringing a full sized canopy also. The BSA usually has bento lunches that you have to pre-pay. If you can find out how much it is and to whom people should send their money, that would be great. We look forward to seeing everyone!

  • Here is a previous post from this past year's meet-up

It'll be at the same location, Gardena CA.

Hmm...airports, I'm guessing LAX and Long Beach Airport. Those are the only ones that I know of close enough to location event site.

LAX, Long Beach (not recomended, small airport), Burbank Airport is also there which is where I usualy fly, less congestion than LAX and easier to get through.

John and I will most likely be there with Ninja and Portia - we will be bringing crates - possibly a pen so we will be able to socialize more with people. Although, Ninja has been improving a lot! Met up with Corina on Sunday and only 1 growl towards Kei the whole time! At the last show, I couldn't get within 10 feet of someone with a dog or else he would start lunging and growling, so we were pretty separated from everyone else! We will definitely come prepared this time around.

Soo..... we just talked about it and we're 80% sure we'll be there with Keiko!!!! I'm so excited :oDDD

We will bring a crate for her and an xpen in case it's needed... she's super lovey/submissive with all dogs and people so it shouldn't be an issue, but I want to make sure she has a 'get away' spot.

We'll be doing the 15 hour drive to get there - super fun road trip!!!! :oD

I really hope we'll be able to go. I'll talk to Noah about it, but it depends a LOT on what happens over the next few months. Noah went back to get his final semester of university, so after he graduates in December, so whether or not we can come depends on what kind of job he gets.

If we do make it, we'll bring Rakka and Tojo.

Question for the Andersons/Shikoku spirit/anyone else:

Must your dogs be Nippo registered still in order to participate in BSA or is JKC/AKC enough?
Also, as shikoku, kai, JA etc aren't registerable with AKC, what registration body do you primarily use in the States for your non-shibas?Hokusei Kashinoki Hokkaido and Shiba Inu

Your dogs must be registered with Nihonken Hozonkai [Nippo] in Japan to participate in the BSA show.

Here is an explanation in English of Nippo: http://www.shiba-inu.nl/Shiba-Inu.Nl_Eng/nihon_ken_hozonkai_Eng.htm

We're in Anaheim (about 45 minutes from Gardena) and we're currently living in a studio apartment with 2 adults, 2 cats, and a rabbit AND Spaz will be here by March BUT if anyone needs a place to stay and doesn't mind the squishiness, our place is open for anyone on the forum. The apartment complex does allow dogs so no problem about that.

  • - JA are registered as Akita in AKC, Kai and Kishu are in AKC FSS.

-Shikoku are Nippo/JKC, CKC registered or other kennel club in Europe. I'm gonna also register my Shikoku with the Puerto Rico Kennel Club (U.S. territory) so that I will be able to register a litter in a couple of years. UKC and CKC as well.

Jesse, no you are not too late.

I just gave count to BSA president now. I included also the "maybes". So we will see how it votes. As spectors you should still be able to go watch. I believe the vote is just on the Shikoku Booth. I asked though, just in case to be polite. Those with Shibas, you already have the clearance - just make sure dogs are on leash or in crate/ex pen and cannot escape.

  • No worries.

Alright so Sunday is the BSA meeting, the president just wants to make sure everybody will be okay with having such a large group set up there.

Also Brad, since you will bring Kona...perhaps you and some of the other Kai ken owners can make up a pamplet? In addition to the Shikoku one. Which, by the way, we still need to make.

What should we have on them?

    - Photos
    - Breed History
    - Temperment
    - Life with a Shikoku / Kai ken
    - Contact/More information - maybe we should just put the forums? Shameless advertising...
    - Fun Activities

Ok, cool - maybe I can get a few Kai Ken owners / Enthusiasts to help. If not I can do it - I can help with the Shikoku one too.

Should we start a thread for the info that goes in these pamphlets? One for Shikoku, one for Kai?

Since we will be bringing an Akita, should I make an Akita one too????

    ----
Post edited by Unknown User at -0001-11-30 00:00:00
  • I think just Shikoku and Kai. Since most people already know about Japanese Akita. Or perhaps you can make pamplets for Japanese Akita, but do not display them. If somebody requests then you can give it out. I asked permission only for promoting Shikoku and Kai ken.

I say this because Akita already have an established club and breed show.

Akiho has their Specialty show at same location, in February I believe. I actually want to try and go to this. I will not take Lynx but I will try to get special permission from Akiho president to bring Shoushuu. Or maybe I will just go as spectator.

We can brainstorm and be creative in another thread on these pamplets, we have 3 months. However you would like to "topic" the thread or threads.

  • News from BSA President:

She has planted "the seed" but she says we will have to wait to see until January to find out what the club's response will be for next year's BSA show (since it'll be a large group this time). Humans are allowed to come and spectate. Our dogs are on a "stand-by".

    Back-up plan:

I'm not sure what everybody will be driving, but I still plan on going...I will leave my dogs in the truck (if we don't get the clear), set up some kind of shade for them and leave plenty of water. Then go out to the truck every now and then to check on them and give potty breaks

  • Since it is going to be a much larger group then last show...I guess the club's concerns are potiential avenues for "extra stuff" to happen. I know, we're all good about keeping our dogs under control....but I think maybe a liability issue. Accidents happen.

Anyone who is human can attend. I got the clear for the last 2 shows to bring non-entered/different breed dogs. The 2007 show was just me and Lynx, then in 2008 we just had a small group. It looks like for 2009 we will have a large group of people bringing dogs and will definitely stand out (for this we need all member permission - especially the booth). Now we just have to wait for word for next year's show.

Evan, I think regardless of the outcome, you still are able to attend...since you own a shiba. I think the problem that we *might* encounter is having a booth for shikoku's and handing out information about the breed (since it is a shiba specific event). So if they say no to the booth, there will be no booth. But I'm sure we can still bring our shiba's. If for any reason, we won't be able to go...we can always have our own mini meet somewhere else!

  • I received an e-mail today with "not so good news". The club decided to not have a Shikoku Booth at the show this year. However, everyone is still more then welcome and encouraged to attend the show.

I'll probably still bring my dogs with me cause it'll be a long day and I don't want to feel rushed to get home. They will stay in my truck though and I will go back and forth to let them out for potty breaks away from the field.

On a "good note"...we can still have a Nihon Ken Forum meet-up and bring our dogs but perhaps we can do something more active for our dogs.

The BSA show generally starts around 9am and should be finished by 3pm. We have some options, we could have our "meet-up" perhaps the day before (Saturday) with our dogs? Or meet up at the BSA Show, watch for a bit and then leave immediately afterwards or a couple of hours earlier and then do something with our dogs.

Once we pick the day we can decide on what to do:
    - Picnic
    - Hike
    - (depending on how far people are willing to drive...I might be able to get an Agility course for the day for our dogs to play on)
    - Other? Any ideas?

Thats a bummer. I don't think I will be attending either...I would be down for a meet somewhere else. Last year it was pretty hot down in Gardena...I wouldn't want to keep my dogs kenneled for hours. If we do have a meet up, I would suggest somewhere towards the south, in OC. It's like 10 degree's cooler!

"Another point that was brought up was that it is a 'Shiba Specialty' and not a 'Japanese dog show'."

Yeah, it's a major bummer but that's fine. They can have their specialty show and maybe someday we can correnlate and put on a Nihon Ken Specialty.

They just want to have focus on the Shibas on this day. So while it would be best to only have dogs who are showing be there. I'm sure it'll be just fine if you were to spectate and bring your "non-entry" Shiba there. At least you'll "blend" into the crowd -wink-.

You guys just don't pay close enough attention. I make typos all the time. I'm anal enough that I generally proofread my posts 2 or 3 times before hitting submit and then usually once more afterward, but they still slip through on occasion. There have been a few times where I stumbled across an old post of mine and thought to myself "holy crap, how did I miss that" or "that's not even English."

As a general rule, I don't dish out what I can't take in. So bring on the karma beotches. :-P

I've seen those mistakes, but I've refrained from remarking on them, so far. Spelling is by far the thing that bothers me the most. Occasionally my niece will be on the pc and check the forum, I'll get her to respond for me and she''ll have to type it twice because she likes to abbreviate words.

  • There are about a thousand reasons to switch to Firefox (more secure, faster, easier to navigate). You will love it.

I've used both, and I still like IE better. Personally I don't find Firefox any faster or easier to navigate than IE, and I'm fairly certain the security is the same.

I use IE and have the Google Toolbar which has spell check. I am a horribly bad speller.

  • friend of mine is a professional hacker (companies hire him to learn how secure their systems really are)

When I asked him which to use, his words were "If you want your system attacked, use IE."

Brad, Dave mentioned to me you used IE. I have to say I was shocked. Every computer person I know, will only use Firefox.

But as with everything, we all have our preferences.

I've used IE but lately I've been having problems regarding spawning multiple tabs for threads on this forum. After I close one down, IE goes into this huge fit of spawning tab after tab of new windows, and the only way I can stop it is to do a force close (happens both at work and at home).

I may have to start using Firefox on this forum...

According to what I've learned, FF is just as insecure as IE, perhaps moreso, FF just releases patches quicker. 2007 vulnerability comparison.

I see them as essentially the same browser. It all comes down to personal preference. I like FF's add-ons, but since most of them don't work in v3, I'll just stick with IE.

Actually, market share has a lot to do with security. IE still has the lion's share of the browser market so it tends to be targeted for attacks most frequently. Same with the windows operating system (vs. os x or *nix). Someday, when firefox rules the world, it will be attacked the most.

  • So...

...everyone who was planning on attending has decided that we do our meet-up somewhere else?

    -------------------------------

I normally will "edit" my posts if I see something is wrong. Most of the time I don't care about spelling, not a good speller so if it sounds close enough...that's good for me! I'm very typical on "run-on" sentences though.

    Hey Corina,
It'd be interesting to go to the BSA for sure, but it doesn't hold as much context for me as a meet-up would. I get to see and meet the people and dogs in person that I read so much about. If they both happened at the same time and I had to choose one, the meet-up holds more pull for me than attending the BSA show (who wouldn't want to meet members of the Brad-pack???). And I think some people were going to travel considerable distances for it (ie. Evan).

Call me a bad person, but I judge people on how they present themselves through writing on the internet. I don't have much else to go on. Also, it's part of my job and I guess it carries over. It's good practice for the real world to use proper grammar in non-professional communications anyway. :-P

I have what Noah calls a literal disorder, in that I tend to take things literally all the time. So if something has a grammatical/spelling error, I have a hard time understanding it.

Ok, just to be straight.... The BSA show is on Sunday March 8 at the South Gardena Park in Gardena, right? I've never been, I'm very interested in Shiba's. In fact I attended my first dog show at the Ventura Fairgrounds.

What would an alternative event/destination be for a meetup as the BSA is out? Ike is out of coat so I will be waiting until the late spring/summer before doing any shows now I guess but we can still travel to a meet.Hokusei Kashinoki Hokkaido and Shiba Inu

Sadly my new flute purchase got bumped up because we decided that the trek down to CA wouldn't be quite the same without the BSA show. So right now finances dictate that we'll be at home on that weekend.

Lindsay - let me know when you have Ike in something around WA and we'll be sure to come check him out!! :o)

Ok, lets get this thread back on track...

    ----

Since we can't do a booth at the Aikokai Specialty I think we need to change the dates of the meet up so that anyone who wants to attend both can do so.

How about we move the meet up to the 21st or 22nd of March?

Lets plan to meet somewhere and do a hike / picnic type thing. How does that sound?

We can just plan to have a nice forum meet up - no booth or anything like that. We will plan for the booth later this year or next year.

I dunno the southern cali are, so I will rely on you guys to come up with a location. I know Romi and Corina have done lots of hikes and will have good ideas.

I would like to get a count of how many people are going so that we can all plan - lets try to get a nice size group for the meet up so that there is more incentive for people to join us.

How does this sound to everyone? How many people would attend something like this?

There is a nice big park in Irvine, CA - Mason Regional Park - There is a lot of grass, lake, and I believe there are hiking/biking trails. Last time we went, we just went around the park to check everything out. There is also a nice hiking spot in Orange, CA - which was really nice (it was the last hike Corina and I went on) - I think Corina mentioned that there is also a 300 acre dog park in Corona, CA - it costs 15 dollars to enter, but dogs can be offleash and the place is huge! I'm sure there are other places in LA/SD - I guess it depends where everyone feels comfortable meeting.

    Hey Romi,
Isn't Mason Regional park (the place where Ichi fell into the duck pond...) $3 for vehicles to enter? I agree it's a beautiful park. I went there over the weekend and they were renovating the bridge. We met a man walking a giant Shiba (really a B&T Jindo) while we were there.

  • Romi - Yes...Prado Dog Park. It's 585 acres of land for doggies to run off leash. It's in Chino Hills, CA.
It's $15 per person or couple with 2 dogs. Then an additional $3 for each extra dog.

Brad - A hike and picnic sound great. Prado really would be a great place, lots of space and we can bring things for our dogs to do (games). March 21st or 22nd "should" be okay for me. I'll have to double check for upcoming trial dates. We (local Belgian Malinois Club) are hosting a kind of "show n go" or trial in March (no sure on dates yet).

Everyone - Let us know which dates will work for you. Reguardless of when the "Forum Meet-up" is. If you're visiting Southern California for a bit, you should totally hit a few of us locals up. We live here -smiles-.

  • Everyone who is excited about the upcoming Shiba Show, if you still wish to attend...by all means please do! The show is still going to be held in March. Especially if you've never been to one before, I encourage you to go and spectate. It is a good demostration of the "Nippo style" way of showing. Go learn, experience and have fun!

I'm going to move our "Forum Meet-up" into a new thread. This one is now closed.
