Me thinks you'll need a taller crate soon. What a beautiful boy! I love that first pic. He just fits in so well.

Just a note. We took Keigo to the dog park a few years ago. The height of the fence around the park looks to be about the height of your fence. Keigo was strong enough to jump the fence from a standing position like pic 3! I can tell you Keigo didn't even need to bend his back legs to get up and over the fence. Just jumped lightly on his toes. I remember you had a plan.

  • The artist formerly known as Pax is a very beautiful dog. It's incredible how mountain dogs pass the impression of power.
He's more than huge and seems to be very comfortable at his new home, with his new pack, already.

Best of luck for all of your pack!

    Kristin - Luytiy is 90lb.

    ----

Osy - Luytiy may get a bit taller but not much, he will fill out tho - we expect him to fill out to about 150lb.

    ----

Brandon - Masha is 5 weeks old now, we pick her up in December when she is 12 weeks old.

This is Masha, bred by Stacey at Esquire Caucasians:
    IMG_4522

    ----

Rui, Sarah, Barbara - He can mos def get out of our fence, I knew that ahead of time. That is why I have these 1000 8 foot Latilla:

    IMG_4429
*Only 600 pictured in this pic.

They will be installed on 75% of our fence, making it an 8' tall fence. The rest of the fence will have some electric tape at the top. Unfortunately they will not be installed until January, which seems like a long time, but we are out of town for almost the whole month of December and he will be kenneled or with us during that time [and therefore not in our yard].

In the short term, when he is allowed to be outside unwatched, we are tethering him in the fenced-in area right out side our back door on a 60' tether. That way he can't get to the outer fence to get out. At nights he is crated in our home - our plan was to put him in one of our kennels outside and not a crate but see the next paragraph for those details. Keep in mind he is still a puppy and therefore needs to be crated some.

As for the the escape artist thing. lol He has proven that to us twice already, not getting out of the fence, but getting out of our kennels. Our kennels have farm gates just like the one in the picture above - we have fed him in a kennel since he got here. Well today Jen secured him in a kennel, gave him breakfast, and came inside the house. Two minutes later he was sitting next to her in the house begging for more food. He had climbed right over the gate.

Round 2: So today I "secured" the farm gates with "field wire" mesh [same stuff that's on our fence]. I used metal ties to attach it to the farm gate. We put him in there, gave him dinner, and closed the door... Ten minutes later, there he is, looking in the window like "can I have more food, please?" - he had totally annilated my "securing" job. So, yes, they are escape artist. :o\ We will just feed him on the tether or in his crate from now on - oh and we ordered a bigger crate for him.

We are learning as we go. :o)

*He is only free [not tethered] in the yard if we are out there with him.

    ----

FYI, Luytiy is from the Tskaro Kennel in Russia, Stacey [Esquire Caucasians] had imported him for breeding but decided to breed his brother instead. He is a year old

Jen - Sorry, I missed your questions. Maui didn't do well with him at first, he basically attacked L, but now it seems to have turned to play. He has started play bowing at him and barking. Maui is kinda a tard so it will take him a bit to learn to like him.

    ----

There is a few things I meant to mention. Luytiy is our first true "guardian breed" and so I have started noticing the difference [first hand] between hunting breeds and guardians. Also, since he is an LGD, there is a little added difference. For example [some of these are rather obvious, but still interesting]...

    - Since he is an LGD he has no prey drive he doesn't chase a ball if you throw it, I mean he really doesn't even acknowledge it at all - but he will give chase to the dogs if they run.

    - He mos def will go and check on something if he hears a noise, all our dogs will do this, the difference is he doesn't bark like a freak [Kona, Lani, Hilo] at stupid things.

    - When he goes to investigate something Kona is barking at, Kona will stop barking if Luytiy just turns and walks away from it - Kona does this with me too.

    - Ahi has been very aggressive due to her injury, today Jen had to move her from one crate to another and when she took her out Ahi imideatly went crazy Cojo style at Big L. Most dogs would show aggression back, or run - what did Big L do? He kinda herded Fuji, Kaia and I away from Ahi and just stood between us and her as if he was protecting us. This was really cool!

    - Another cool thing was his first reaction to my camera, when I pointed it at Jen he kinda charged at me and blocked her, once I let him sniff it he was fine.

    - Here is an interesting dog behavior thing, we gave him and Ahi a bone today in their crates. Ahi freaks out and barks and growls ant anything that passes her crate when she is chewing her bone. L didn't at all, he just gave a look but made no sound. It is as if he understands he is in a crate and the dogs can't get his bone and Ahi doesn't. Or maybe he is just super confident and knows none of them will try to take it - but that would be dumb if that was the case because god knows our Nihonken will try to take it!

    - Luytiy has not made a sound since he has been with us - not a peep!

As usual, I love your observations! It is really cool that he is so protective so quickly.

How much will he gain? Keigo was also 9 months old when we got him and 90lbs. He was so skinny then. He's probably about 115lbs now.

Barbara - He should fill-out to about 150lb. He is pretty skinny now, intentionally, so that he doesn't put to much strain on his joints.

    ----

Update on our efforts to "cage the beast", good news and bad news...

I added more reinforcements today to the farm gate on the kennel, we put him and walked away, 1 minute later he was next to Jen - he had escaped again!!!

So we put him back in the kennel and hide from him so we could watch how he was getting out. Come to find out he was squeezing his body through this tiny opening between the gate and the kennel, he could push it out just enough to escape.

    The good news...

I changed the way we latch the kennel, and put him back in and he couldn't get out! So we were able to secure him! :o)

    The bad news...

He hates being in the kennel outside, I think it is because he wants to work [guard] when he is out there and not be constrained. :o( He is way happier in his crate in the house, so I did all that work for nothing. lol :oT It was a good learning experience tho. Now I am not 100% sure he could get over those gates as easy as we thought.

    ----

I am uploading some video of Luytiy now...

Well I have some updates on Luytiy...

    The Vet Visit
We took Luytiy to the vet today to have him Micro Chipped, it went well. He was a bit nervous [as were we] but he was a gentleman. We also had them look at his foot, he has a little spot on it that we wanted to get checked out. Seems it is just a place he had been licking and biting a bit too much. He also has been holding that leg up when he is in the office, we expected it was Pano and Stacey [breeder] agreed. The vet took a look and agreed it is Pano and so we have some Rimadyl for him.

    His New Gear
Today we received his tethers, I think they are appropriately named:
    IMG_4743

    IMG_4742
*He hates being on the tether, it seems he has a little separation anxiety from Jen. I guess we will need to work on that since he needs to be outside working! :o\ Right now I think he thinks his job it to guard Jen, which could be good and bad.

He also got to wear his Ruff Wear harness for the first time, we use it to restrain him in the car [we connect a tether to it]:
    IMG_4740

    IMG_4739
*It looks kinda funny on such a big guy. lol

    The Kennel Saga
Well, today Jen put him in the kennel but didn't attach the top wire part and he climbed out. So it seems he can climb out, and squeeze out. The good news is he can't get out with the top part secured properly.

I'm glad to vet visit went well. I'm really sorry to hear he has Pano though. I've heard it can be a bit debilitating, so the fact that he's up and about playing with Kahuna is a great sign!

You're right btw, that ruffwear harness is pretty goofy looking on him. I think the new style is pretty goofy looking in general though. The old style might look better.

The color of his eyes is striking! That last picture of him with the mountains in the background....he seems to be home. :-)

Osy, Luytiy is growing quickly and it's wearing on his leg bones. Pano is common in large breeds (though small breeds can get it too) and Luytiy will grow out of it in time.

Brad, Luytiy is gorgeous! I hate that he's so skinny, but know that with extra large dogs, you have to keep their weight in check to allow their bones to grow strong to handle the weight.

  • Osy - This might help - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panosteitis

Even humans can have it, especially (as in dogs) larger humans. I remember having leg pain when I was around 13-16, during the most intense period of my growth. Around here we cal it "Dores de Crescimento" (growth pain)

I don't know a single guy that didn't have growing pains at some point growing up. Some more severe and longer lasting than others. Pano is a bit more serious than just growing pains as it can have side effects consistent with a viral infection, but it always goes away with time.

Love all the pics. Luytiy is just absolutely adorable! What a sweet-looking dog -love his eyes... And I know he will also be true to the "beast" designation when those coyotes come calling, no doubt, but he looks so gentle in the pics! I love all the pics but I think my favorites are the very first one in this thread where you get an idea of the (current) size differences with all the way from the shiba to the mtn doggie (I know Luytiy will get even bigger); the one of him looking over the gate outside (he must stretch out to be more than 6 ft' tall on his hind legs?); and also the one of Luytiy and (I think its) Kahuna patiently sitting at the doggie gate looking into the kitchen. I'd say this second one illustrates the rapid pace of assimilation of the two "newbies" into the household. What model pack members, or a tribute to the human members of the family and their skills at ensuring a smooth integration of the family!

I remember how painful those growing pains were - I shot up 7" from age 11 to 12, my brothers' made it seem much more painful and their growth spurt was about the same heighth change but they were between the ages of 15-17. I never really knew that dogs would get the same.

Ha Ha! What a big sweetie --- can't believe how relaxed Luytiy is and how he has so quickly adjusted to all the other doggies --- smooth transition, it seems. It will be interesting to see how his behavior changes as he "grows" up...

  • I wonder how much of his speedy comfort is due to the sheer confidence he seems to radiate. It's like he knows there aren't many things that can really stand up to him.
I'm sure if he ever feels a real threat, he'll turn into a mean big dog, and I wouldn't like to be the object of his attention then.
You guys have a great protector and friend to all of the members of the pack, I'd say!

I love how him being on his back can send any of the dogs about 2 feet away while he playfully "kicks out". I'm sure Kona and Kahuna realized that when they tried to sniff his goods.

Thanx all! I have been trying to get pics of him w/ some scenic background - he is hard to take pics of because he is so busy running all around.

Jen - You know, his ears don't bother me at all. His head [and whole body] is so fluffy you don't notice his ears being cropped. Every now and then you pet his head and feel his ears and you are like "oh yea, his ears are cropped."... I'll ask Jen if they bother her.

Figured it was time for a Luytiy update...

    ----

As of last night Luytiy has started doing something that is typical of some of the LGD breeds. He has started "roaring" every night at the Coyote when they start their evening howling. It's pretty loud and intimidating, I'm sure our neighbors have no idea what it is. From inside the house it almost sounds like a hound's bark but once you get outside it really does sound more like a roar. It's pretty cool - and loud!

    ----

We have also uped his calorie intake so he can started putting some weight on, since he is over a year old it's safe for him to be at his full weight now. I tried to take some pics to show his weight gain, but I dunno if you can tell - but here they are anyway...

    IMG_4946

    IMG_4940

*He is growing his undercoat back now too, he had blown his coat right before we picked him up.

    ----

We also got his new crate:

    IMG_4927

No joke, I think a donkey could fit in this crate - it's freaking HUGE!

You can most definitely see the difference in the pictures. Mainly in his waist / area.

So LGD blow coat? I thought they were regular shedders..."The more you know!"

So I guess L is a cross between a bear, a wolf, & a lion lol I want to hear the Luytiy Roar :p ~

Oh, Also, I meant to update you guys on this too...

    Training BIG L...

He was very difficult to get to listen and understand what we wanted. It took us 4 days to get him to sit, but once he learned it he does it 99% of the time and will even offer the behavior for treats and stuff. He also has learned down, and he has a pretty amazing recall too! :o)

Brad, you're comparing his recall to nihon ken. I think a deaf dog would appear to have pretty amazing recall compared to a nihon ken. :-P

Now, I know that Jen would just rattle around in that crate, so don't make her do it!!! LOL

Thanks for keeping us informed, and sounds like Luytiy will do a fabulous job of at least drowning out the coyote voices (and probably scaring the devil out of them!!!)... Can't wait to hear the full sound when you can catch on the video cam...

Here is an attempt to get the "roar" on video... It's not the best example but it does show the "houndish" sound to his "roar". I will try to get a better example this week.

We had a lot of Coyote activity last night.

8:00 pm - Wow! Watched TV with the people! My favorite thing!

11:00 pm - Sleeping on the bed! My favorite thing!

    CAT DIARY:

Day 983 of my captivity. My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre

    little dangling objects.

They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed

hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the

rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to

keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps

m e going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once

    again vomit on the carpet.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet.

I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly

demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made

condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am. Bastards!

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was

placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I

could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement

was due to the power of 'allergies.' I must learn what this means, and

how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my

tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this

again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs!

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches.

The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released -- and

seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.

The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicate with the

guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors

have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is

    safe. For now...

So I was chatting with a friend of mine today on IM and he asked me "Did you get that wolf killer dog beast yet?"... I was like "yea man, a few weeks ago". Then he was like "Lets see some pics!"...

So I showed him a few pics, including this one:
This is Luytiy, our Caucasian Ovcharka

    His response?

"THIS dog can kills things? Really? Like BIG things?"

LOL - I was like, yea, he is kinda cute - not very scary. Then a few minutes later he sent me this:
