Here's a shot of it. Notice on her left ear on the ridge there's a dark area with no hair? She has that on both ears and it's starting to concern me. I'm going to call the vet tomorrow but I thought I'd solicit input anyway.

on a side note, Kiyo had his first trip to the dog park last Saturday. He behaved very well. He has came a long way since his first experience with a group of dogs in his puppy class at 5 months. They were having a weiner dog meetup so there were a ton of them scrambling around. He didn't really bother with them though. There was a puppy Shar Pei that was bullying all of the other dogs, running into them and playing out of control. He was coming up on Kiyoshi out of control and Kiyo got into his bold stance and the Shar Pei stopped, his tailed dropped and he let Kiyo sniff him. From then on Kiyo was the king of the dog park, all the other dogs just followed him wherever he ran to. I need to figure out how to stop him from stealing all the tennis balls he sees flying around next.]]>
Sarcoptic Mange. What to look for? http://www.nihonken.org/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/3830/sarcoptic-mange.-what-to-look-for Sat, 11 Apr 2009 21:11:40 -0400 tsukitsune 3830@/forum/index.php?p=/discussions
Well. His new mom brought him to the vet today, and it turns out he had a positive skin scrape for Sarcoptic Mange.

Which means what for my dogs exactly??? I gave his new home all Henson's bedding, so we're good there. I'm washing my couch cushions and rugs as I type this... while Henson and my dogs briefly interacted over the last few weeks, rarely did they stay near each other - no snuggling or anything like that. Should I have their skin scraped? What symptoms other than itching and hair loss should I watch for? Are they healthy enough to maybe ward off infection??

We have a physical scheduled for 4/29 so I hope until then they'll be fine and we'll just do the skin scrape there..

What's the Matter With Tosca? http://www.nihonken.org/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/3828/whats-the-matter-with-tosca Sat, 11 Apr 2009 05:03:33 -0400 santuzza 3828@/forum/index.php?p=/discussions
I spent the day at home just laying around and hanging around with her. I went to the gym this evening with my friend in the evening and when I got back my mother, who was quite annoyed, told me that she finally had to put the dog out because she was whining and making her little shiba noises and my parents couldn't figure out what the problem was. It had started to rain so she was screaching and was brought in very quickly. She was quiet for a little while and then she randomly ran into the middle of my parents living room a yodeled. I was trying to make a sample of my newest culinary experiment to see if I wanted to make it for Easter dessert and Tosca was seriously under foot which is not normal for her. After we went back down to the apartment, she seemed uneasy and was shaking for a while. I picked her up and held her on my lap and the shaking stopped. Then I went and got her rawhide chew bone out of the pantry and she's currently busy with that.

I don't know what her issue is/was and I thought that some of you more knowledgable people may have some insight. She ate. We went on our walks. we spent plenty of time together. I don't get it.]]>

(I always wanted shiba!) We had to compromise on the color, I'm partial to black/tan, but Greg has his heart set on a sesame. Honestly, it didn't take much convincing for me to see it his way! I am really excited about our puppy options. There are 3 breeders in Japan with Sesame Shiba pups right now, at least that I found, and I love our options so I've stopped the painful (due to language difference) search. Sooooo, here they are!

Female, 2 months-

Male, 8 months. We love him, but we're nervous that he may not have had any training in the 8 months of his life. Who knows what his life has been like. He looks incredibly happy and sweet though!

Females, 2 months.

How am I supposed to choose from this?!?!?! It's impossible! We're going to visit the last 3, they are a 7 hour drive and kinda near each other. So we're going to see the 8mo boy in his habitat and see how he behaves and attempt to learn about him. Then we're going to see the precious baby girls. We are in love with all of them. Dog overboard found four months later

SYDNEY (AFP) – A pet dog that fell overboard in rough seas off Australia has been reunited with its owners after surviving alone on an island for four months, reports said.

Sophie Tucker, apparently named after a late US entertainer, fell overboard as Jan Griffith and her family sailed through choppy waters off the northeast Queensland coast in November.

The dog was believed to have drowned and Griffith said the family was devastated.

But out of sight of the family, Sophie Tucker was swimming doggedly and finally made it to St Bees Island, five nautical miles away, and began the sort of life popularised by the TV reality show "Survivor."

She was returned to her family last week when Griffith contacted rangers who had captured a dog that had been living off feral goats on the largely uninhabited island, in the faint hope it might be their long-lost pet.

When the Griffiths met the rangers' boat bringing the dog to the mainland they found that it was indeed Sophie Tucker on board.

"We called the dog and she started whimpering and banging the cage and they let her out and she just about flattened us," Griffith told the national AAP news agency.

"She wriggled around like a mad thing."

Griffith said that when the dog was first spotted on the island she had been in poor condition.

"And then all of a sudden she started to look good and it was when the rangers had found baby goat carcasses so she'd started eating baby goats," she said.

Sophie Tucker, a member of the Australian cattle dog breed, had been quick to readjust to the comforts of home, complete with airconditioning, Griffiths said.

"She surprised us all. She was a house dog and look what she's done, she's swum over five nautical miles, she's managed to live off the land all on her own," Griffiths said.

"We wish she could talk, we truly do."]]>

Pooping a struggle?! http://www.nihonken.org/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/3806/pooping-a-struggle Wed, 08 Apr 2009 12:17:31 -0400 MikeCP 3806@/forum/index.php?p=/discussions
First off, I feel like he poops too infrequently. He probably pooped 5 times in the last week.

Second, when he does poop, its a process. He doesn't whine, so as far as I know, it doesn't appear that he is in pain. But the pooping process can take up to a minute and a half or so. He'll get the bulk of it out right away, and it looks like decent poop, but then he'll stay squatting and push every once in a while. Anything that comes out during this time, which isn't much, is mostly kind of wet.

He's being fed almost exactly what he was eating at the breeder for the first 9 weeks of his life, which is:

teaspoon of wellness for puppies
teaspoon of abady for puppies
2 teaspoons of abady granulated stress and maintenance
squirt of fish oil
and occasionally a teaspoon of raw beef

He's fed three times a day, as well as plenty of kibble throughout the day.

He has access to water at all times, though he doesn't drink as much as I'd think a puppy would.

What do you think?!]]>
Kenzo snuggle behavior http://www.nihonken.org/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/3792/kenzo-snuggle-behavior Mon, 06 Apr 2009 19:20:57 -0400 Vahid 3792@/forum/index.php?p=/discussions
Normally Kenzo is not particularly into cuddles, he accepts it easily but won't seek it out or react to it much.

However, I noticed that after I 'get mad' at Kenzo and tell him off for something (which I do with a looming body posture and a vocalization) he will back off for a second as though he has had a little shock (in what I THINK is a submissive rather than excited way), but recently after this he will come right back and solicit some real snuggling as if to ask 'do you still love me? am I still in the pack?' He'll do this by pressing his side against me a lot and brushing his head around, really enjoying it when I pet him. He will sometimes put his ears back in the submissive position too.

Anyone else had this happen? And any ideas about how to get this kind of behavior out of him without having to 'get mad' first? :)

This occurs most often when I'm working and he comes over and grumbles at me because he's bored and wants to play or go outside. He'll get a little antsy, and then after I tell him no, he will skitter away and then come back- having calmed right down- and do the snuggle thing.]]>
