No succes in the group rings but I was very proud from Nuuk's behaviour in the big rings (we had to participate to group and best junior competitions). We had really long (and cold) day so I thought that Nuuk would be asshole at the end of the day. Nuuk did excellent PR for the kai :). ]]>

Cody got excellent, and cert, so when he turns 2 years old he will be Danish Champion :) He was in the BIS junior competition too, but didn't place.

They both did very well considering there were a lot of people and dogs crammed into a relatively small space. It was a sports hall, though not a big one. Koro was a bit intimidated at first, but he got better and better as the day went by.

Anyways I had a blast, ofcourse, as I got loads of kai cuddles :)

Pics (you will notice that even though Koro is only 5 mos old, he is already bigger and more sturdy than 15 mos old Cody. He's gonna be a big boy!):

White/Cream in the NK http://www.nihonken.org/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/6947/whitecream-in-the-nk Sun, 27 Nov 2011 05:09:07 -0500 TheWalrus 6947@/forum/index.php?p=/discussions
Why are white coats shunned in the NK?

If you take a look at the present NIPPO standard, white is not a 'non-standard' color. You can register a white Shiba for instance. White is not however, preferred (i.e. will be severely penalized in the ring) in the Shikoku and Shiba. In Akita, Hokkaido, and Kishu, white is allowed. The NIPPO standard specifically calls for all Kai to be brindle, so white is not allowed.

Why is white not preferred? Written into the present NIPPO standard are all manner of details on conformation, among these is a clause calling for all coat coloration to have strong hues, and for judges to watch for lightening or dilution of color. Any dilution of color is seen as a weakening in the coat color genetic code, leading to loss of that color in the breed. Since NIPPO's stated goal is preservation, this is unacceptable. The standard also calls for urajiro in the NK. It is obviously not possible to judge whether a white dog has urajiro, or to judge the color hues of the genes it is carrying (other than white).

Exhibit one, the Kishu. The Kishu was not a predominantly white breed. In the early days of the breed it was predominantly 'yushoku' (having color). There is ancient art from the area depicting hunting dogs from the area as black, and looking back at some of the first NIPPO exhibitions, the numbers show roughly 70% yushoku, with only 30% of the dogs being white. Fast forward to the present day, and the breed is almost entirely white. How did this happen? Apparently there was a line with some outstanding studs who happened to be white, and they were used extensively. General preference leaned toward white these lines, and toward white Kishu in general. White x yushoku breedings result in mixed litters, but white x white breedings result in only white pups (so I've been told and the numbers seem to back that up). So here we are today, the breed has almost completely lost its variety in color.

White dogs can be bred, and litters registered. While this was done possibly more often in the past when a white dog had some outstanding and desired trait, today it is shunned and almost non-existent. As I mentioned earlier, white is severely penalized in the ring, and at best your dog will be given a 'B' grade which is to say the dog has traits which make it an inferior specimen. There have been issues in the NK with urajiro creeping up over the body, and into the facial areas, and NIPPO and its members have/are breeding away from that. This issue has been seen recently in the Shiba, along with dilution of coat hues, which has lead to careful selection away from these traits. Other issues that have been seen in the past in coat colors is spotting (i.e. pinto). This is also among the list of unacceptable coat traits, which along with all the other issues involved with preserving color has lead to careful selective breeding when it comes to color, leading NIPPO members to keep the white coloration at arm's length.

To side track just a little, black (i.e. black/tan) is allowed in the standard, and while in the medium sized NK it is rare, and dogs with this coloration are not often shown, they are often used for breeding to improve coat quality/color. The reason for them not being shown very often is that the facial markings have to be correct, and the black needs to be a solid black hue. Often facial markings (i.e. the 2 spots above the eyes that lead to black often being referred to as 'yotsume' or four-eye) are not clear (ie blurred or misshaped), and urajiro is incorrect, plus many black dogs have red tips on their guard hairs which is not preferred. It is difficult to produce a correctly colored black Shikoku.

I just wanted to know if anyone else is coming to the World Dog Show in Paris this year? If so, are you bringing a dog, and in case you are, which one(s)?

I am coming with Eo, and it would be a chance to meet some of the forum people as well as entering a big show. If anyone else is coming that is ;)]]>

The event was held in a new location, and luckily for me it's around 30 minutes away from my house. I got there early to help set up. I've been attending a lot of NIPPO shows for several years now, and aside for showing a friend's pup once, I'm just there taking pictures and meeting up with friends. Today however my good friend and mentor was busy with the judging (he's a NIPPO judge in training), so was unable to show his own dogs.

My two Kishu are far off the standard, so I don't show them, and Haru is KKA (Kai Ken Aigokai), so I can't show her either. The other day I got a call from my friend asking if I wanted a little practice handling, in preparation for when I actually have a dog to show. I was more than happy to agree to show one of his dogs. She's a very nice red Shikoku female, but at 6 years old she's never really shown well. She doesn't like the ring, and has always dropped her tail (in NIPPO that's very frowned upon).

Well I got her out on leash for the first time yesterday, and then today was the big day. Of course, Saki's tail was dragging. Well wonder of wonders and after hours of coaxing, walking, and treats (and maybe a little begging), I managed to get her through the morning 'kotai shinsa' (physical exam) without her tail dropping. Everyone was surprised, and while we thought that she wouldn't make it to the actual judging in the afternoon, she did.

Amazingly enough she did even better in the afternoon, and I was able to get her into at least a semblance of a stand. We ended up taking 3rd place. I was giddy, and everyone came round to congratulate us, at which point Saki's tail dropped, haha. So, I guess I just burned through my beginner's luck.

It was a great day though as my mentor's aka young male Shikoku took 1st in his class (as usual), and then went up against the adult male who took first for the 'Honbusho'. He's been going after this at all the regional's this fall, and kept coming up short. Today was his lucky day however, and he ended up winning. Since my friend was helping with the judging, another friend (Suzuki-san, Koshi's breeder) had to show him, and he did an excellent job.

It was a great day all around, and I even had Haru tag along for fun. She got to meet and play with some of the other Kai there.

Anyway, here are some pictures.

Random Kai female.

This is Gin, a Nippo registered Kai male owned by a woman I know. He's a very big boy, and there's a possibility he'll be over size in the near future. He's got nice brindle, and a strong tail, but some characteristics that are not to my liking.

Another Kai male owned by a friend.

2 year old Shikoku male owned by a friend. His owner is not a hunter, but tags along with us to the training facility to work this boy on boar. He does pretty well.

Random Kishu male. I kind of liked this boy. Again not your typical Kishu head. He came in third, losing out to a Shikoku in second, and a more typical Kishu in first.

I just got back from the most awesome thing ever....we officially went lure coursing.

The Tri State Jack Russell Terrier Club had an all breed Funday today, and there was racing, go-to-ground, weiny bobbing and, lure coursing. I hate that my internet connection at home is so slow, because I have to wait to upload the neato video I got of Beebe the Shiba Inu ripping up the track until later. It was cool.

I didn't realize my vid cut out right after she launched off. Hope this posts ok.

Yeah, I finally figured out You Tube!]]>

This will be the first dog show I attend in person and not TIVO, so I'm excited! Given the number of shiba breeders in this state, I'm going to assume that we can anticipate a good showing for the Shibas!

Is it wrong that I hope the shibas don't place? I mean the only thing that I can see is that it means an explosion of people wanting them.]]>
Shiba Inu Aikokai Specialty - Shikoku Booth http://www.nihonken.org/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/2471/shiba-inu-aikokai-specialty-shikoku-booth Mon, 10 Nov 2008 21:03:45 -0500 ShikokuSpirit 2471@/forum/index.php?p=/discussions
She believes that this is benefitical for the promotion and preservation of Japanese breeds. When Nippo in Japan hear of it, this should make them very proud. The Nippo judge at the previous show was very surprised and pleased that there were other Japanese breeds there.

For next year, she thinks that the Shikoku booth and pamplets info on the breed is a great idea. So long as we have shade for our dogs (set up a tent) and continue to have control of our dogs (on leash or in crates)...should be okay. She is going to annouce this at their next BSA meeting to get a vote, which is this upcoming Sunday.

She needs to know about how many people and their Shikoku will be attending. The club needs to know numbers, maybe they will set aside a spot for us to fit our booth and dogs.

The BSA show will be the 2nd Sunday in March.

Those of you who will be going please give confirmation in this post.

Those of you who might be going but not for certain, maybes are allowed.

I need to let her know by this Saturday, so that she can fit it into her notes.

Thank you.]]>
