Growing up, I never had a dog in my life, so she is my first dog ever and of course, my first Shiba.

She did really well and paid attention to me through out the course. She just couldn't resist the urge to scratch at the last station and I had to ask the judge for a redo, costing us 3 points. I can't be prouder of her as this is something that I never expected we would do when I got her 15 months ago. And we only started learning Rally signs about 4 months ago.

We are getting our ribbons for 2nd placement (red ribbon) and qualifying (green ribbon) image

What I like a lot about Rally is that it is supposed to be fun and handlers are encouraged to talk to their dog unlike in traditional competition obedience, you can only use either verbal or hand signals and commands can not be repeated.

And what matters most to me is that Maluko enjoys Rally and the chance to work together as a team on the course. I hope we will do well tomorrow too, but as long as we are having fun, the rest isn't really that important.]]>

All 6 Shibas are from the same breeder and they are related, so this is really a family reunion for the dogs.

Lindsay has Ike (4 years old male) and Farrah (1 year old female) . Pam has Eli (2 years old male) and Pip (4 months old female) and I have Maluko (6 year old female) and Koji (1 1/2 year old male). Farrah and Pip are half sisters and they are both Koji's aunts. Ike and Eli are 3/4 brothers and Maluko's grandsire links her to all the other dogs.

There's a little 1.5 yr old shiba female who needs a new home because her family didn't research the breed before they got one, and have now decided that they want a more cuddly dog that won't run off (they were having problems because their yard isn't fenced)

My little girl Panda goes to doggy daycare twice a week, so that's how I met Saki If anyone's interested let me know, and I can give you more info :)

The Shiba http://www.nihonken.org/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/6199/the-shiba Wed, 26 Jan 2011 04:25:09 -0500 TheWalrus 6199@/forum/index.php?p=/discussions
There are differing theories as to how the breed received it's name. One is that they were named because their red coats were similar in color to dried brushwood (shiba). Another is because the archaic reading for the kanji 'shiba' means small. The last theory is that they were named so because they were adept at weaving through brushwood when hunting.

It is said that the Nihon Ken has been present in Japan since the Jomon period. Unearthed shell mounds from the period have uncovered canine bones with approximately the same bone structure and size as the modern day Shiba. The fact that many of these dogs are believed to have been buried with their masters shows the close relationship the people of the time had with these dogs. Today there is a type of Shiba called the Jomon Shiba, which has been back bred to resemble the bone structure and type present in the early native dogs.

The Nihon Ken Hozonkai (Japanese Dog Preservation Society, or Nippo) was established in 1928 to preserve the native dogs from extinction. Crossbreeding with western dogs was prevalent, and Nippo members scoured the country collecting dogs from remote areas for breeding programs. The Shiba was declared a Living Natural Monument by the government of Japan in 1936.

During the harsh economic period Japan experienced during and immediately after World War 2, owning dogs was seen as wasteful and unpatriotic. Most dogs were rounded up and killed, and the Shiba was no exception. The dog's coats were used to provide clothing for the military, and many were eaten. It was through the noble efforts of Nippo members that the Shiba survived. The breed's number were severely depleted, and many prime specimens of the breed were lost. It took many years and the efforts of many society members to bring the breed back from the brink of extinction.

Today the Shiba is the most popular of the Nihon Ken, accounting for approximately 80 percent of dogs registered with Nippo every year. The breed has also become popular overseas.

The Shiba is the only small sized Nihon Ken. It has prick ears, and a curl or sickle tail. Like all Nihon Ken the Shiba has a double coat made up of coarse outer guard hairs, and fine thick undercoat which it sheds twice a year. It has a somewhat shorter coat when compared with the other Japanese breeds. There are three recognized coat colors: red, black, and sesame. White (or cream) Shiba are also born on occasion, but are non-standard. All Shiba should have "urajiro" markings which are markings of a white or cream color presented on the ventral portions of the body and legs, as well as on the cheeks and brow of the head. Dogs range in size from 38-41cm, and bitches from 35-38cm (NIPPO, JKC), dogs 38.5-41.5cm, bitches 35.5-38.5cm (FCI).

The Shiba is intelligent, and like all Nihon Ken, is a very independent thinker. They are an alert and energetic breed. Yearly registrations in their home country number from 50,000-60,000 (all registries combined). At present there is no estimate available for the total population. The main breed registry is run by Nippo, but there are several smaller breed clubs, and a large number of Shiba are registered with the JKC. There are also 2 rarer 'types' of Shiba, the Jomon Shiba, and the Minowa Shiba. The Jomon was back bred to traits found in the earliest dog bones discovered in Japan, and has less of a stop, and a thinner longer muzzle. The Minowa Shiba is a deep mahogany red color and is found in Gifu Prefecture.]]>

Annual Shiba Party/picnic - Shiba Inu Fanciers of Northern CA; SAT June 4 http://www.nihonken.org/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/6461/annual-shiba-partypicnic-shiba-inu-fanciers-of-northern-ca-sat-june-4 Sat, 23 Apr 2011 00:41:10 -0400 lyzk 6461@/forum/index.php?p=/discussions -------------------

Hi Shiba Lovers,

It's that time of year, again. Dust off your Shibas, your lawn chairs and picnic basket and plan to attend the 21st Annual Shiba Party. Last year we had over 250 people and 150 dogs. This is the oldest and largest Shiba event of its kind in the Country. Even if you don't have a Shiba, it is the best place to learn about the dogs from those who love them.

Attached is a flyer with all the particulars. Please check out the contests and plan to enter those for which your dog is eligible. They toy scramble was a big success last year and hopefully everyone will participate this year. The dogs love it.

Last year we emphasized the Rescue Shiba and will again have a free Parade of Rescues and a certificate for all participants. I would like to put a few rescue stories and pictures in the booklet, so if you have a rescue Shiba and could give me a brief paragraph on its history and a photo, I will be publishing the first half dozen or so respondents I receive. Any Shiba with an interesting story, whether it's a rescue or not, may be good for the booklet. Please send those, too. There must be some great stories out there.

We are also accepting donation items for the raffle and some high-end items for the silent auction. It is through these functions that we make money to fund the Club and support Shiba Rescue. Anyone wishing to donate items should email SFNCraffle@gmail.com.

This time of year can be quite warm. There are plenty of trees, but if you wish to be assured of a certain spot or would like to set up near the contest ring, consider bringing a shade canopy or Easy-up.

Please RSVP to me if you plan to attend. This way I have a count for how many free souvenir booklets to print. Try to be there at starting time in order to enjoy all the events. All information is on the attached flyer.

See you there and tell your friends,

Jacey Holden

Bel killed a snake today http://www.nihonken.org/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/5813/bel-killed-a-snake-today Mon, 23 Aug 2010 22:54:49 -0400 shibamistress 5813@/forum/index.php?p=/discussions
Well today, it was Bel's turn. I was out with her and Oskar, and I heard the wierd, almost rattling sound these snakes make, but before I could even register it, Bel darted past me and grabbed the snake right behind its head. It was actually pretty amazing to watch: she bit hard and fast behind the head, then let it go and leapt out of the way, and while I was trying to catch her to get her away from it (didn't know what kind of snake it was yet), she darted in and did the same thing twice more: fast bite, and then leap out of the way. By then I realized it was a bull snake (not the same one Toby had--it was smaller than that, about two feet long). I still wanted her to get her away from it, but by now she was shaking the snake and tossing it into the air. the whole thing took less time then it took me to write this--it was amazingly fast.

I'm sorry she killed the snake--I'd prefer not to have them kill the bull snakes, and of course it's very worrisome--she could get really hurt if she tried it with a rattlesnake and wasn't so quick. But on the other hand, it was fascinating to watch her technique too, and damn, was she fast!

And it's one of the reasons I love my crazy little girl: she's fearless, and she is SUPER prey driven, which I find fascinating. She's an excellent hunter, and during the summer, usually gets at least one critter a week (sometimes more), and by now, she knows what to eat and what not to eat (she gave up the snake pretty willingly, as she has already decided she doesn't eat snakes or lizards. But she eats birds whole, feathers and all, and eats most of rats/mice/rabbits too, even though I would do try to get them away from her (as I worry about worms/parasites from the rodents).

Anyway, here's one Shiba who hasn't lost her drive to hunt!

(and I kept Oskar far away from the snake. I don't want Mr. Clumsy Puppy to even THINK he should try that).]]>

She normally goes to one of the houses behind us to try to play with the dogs, and normally comes home when we call.
Yesterday morning, however, we let her out for her morning pee and she was gone within 5 minutes.
She didn't come to our calls and we had to get to work and didn't have time to look for her.
When we got home we asked some neighbors and found out that animal services had been called to pick her up.
By this time it was too late to get her and she spent the night there.
I got her as soon as they opened today. She looked so sad in the cage there. :(

Something has been really bothering me though, they didn't scan her for a micro-chip.
If I hadn't found out where she was from my neighbors she would've been put down in three days. :/

Thankfully she's home and safe. :)]]>
